New Jersey Italian Heritage Commission Collaborates with the Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Rutgers University, the New Jersey Office of Commissions, and AAPI New Jersey to Honor Women Trailblazers, Including NJIHC’s Dr. Gilda Rorro

Trenton, NJ — The New Jersey Italian Heritage Commission (NJIHC), in partnership with the Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Rutgers University, the New Jersey Office of Commissions, and AAPI New Jersey, is proud to support an upcoming empowerment conference on March 14th, 2026 designed to recognize and uplift high school and college students who are emerging leaders and catalysts for change.

The conference will bring together students who demonstrate a strong commitment to leadership, learning, and advocacy—particularly in the areas of gender justice, social justice, equity, gender studies, and related disciplines. Through interactive learning activities and meaningful networking opportunities, participants will engage with peers and leaders who share a passion for creating positive change within their schools and communities.

A highlight of the day’s program will be a special Trailblazer Recognition Award, celebrating exceptional students for their leadership and achievements, while also honoring women leaders from other Commissions including NJIHC’s Curriculum Committee Chair, Dr. Gilda Rorro, a longtime New Jersey Italian Heritage Commissioner, educator, and advocate. Dr. Rorro will be recognized as a Trailblazer for her enduring contributions to education, cultural preservation, and her unwavering commitment to equity and academic excellence across New Jersey.

Students, educators, and nominators interested in attending the conference or submitting a nomination are invited to complete the official form titled “Celebrating Women’s Achievements as Trailblazers.”

“This conference reflects our shared mission to elevate student voices while honoring leaders who have paved the way through education, service, and advocacy,” said Vincent Maione, NJIHC Chairman of the New Jersey.
